Realistic fine painting can sometimes seem complicated to a beginner. You see a smooth transition, a translucent edge, a convincing shadow, or a tiny highlight, and you wonder how a painter achieves that. The Old Masters usually built up their paintings step by step. They did not start immediately with the smallest details. First, they established the composition and proportions.
